BackstopJS

Visual regression testing of web apps by screenshot comparison

Tool overview

BackstopJS automates visual regression testing of web applications by comparing screenshots over time. Tests are rendered with headless Chrome, and user interactions can be simulated with Playwright or Puppeteer scripts.

An in-browser report shows reference, test and visual diff images side by side, with filtering, a diff inspector, a scrubber and test approval; CLI and JUnit reports are also produced. Integrated Docker rendering removes cross-platform rendering differences, and BackstopJS works with CI and source control, as a global or local package.

BackstopJS is distributed under the MIT licence on GitHub, where the repository is still updated; its author is looking for a new maintainer.
