Toxiproxy

Simulates network conditions for testing resilience

Tool overview

Toxiproxy is a framework for simulating network conditions, made specifically for testing, CI and development environments. It supports deterministic tampering with connections, as well as randomised chaos and customisation.

It is used to prove with tests that an application does not have single points of failure. Toxiproxy consists of two parts: a TCP proxy written in Go, through which application traffic is routed, and client libraries that control the proxy from tests to add latency, bandwidth limits, timeouts and other conditions.

Toxiproxy is developed by Shopify, which has used it in its development and test environments since October 2014; it is open source and actively maintained on GitHub.
