Playwright

Cross-browser end-to-end testing and web automation

Tool overview

Playwright is a framework for web testing and automation that drives Chromium, Firefox and WebKit with a single API. It is available for TypeScript/JavaScript, Python, .NET and Java, so the same approach can be used across teams and languages.

The Playwright Test runner waits for elements to be actionable before acting, and its assertions retry automatically until conditions are met, which removes artificial timeouts and reduces flaky tests. Each test runs in a fresh browser context for full isolation, tests run in parallel across browsers, and failures can be investigated with the HTML report and the trace viewer, which records each action, DOM snapshot and network request.

Beyond testing, Playwright offers a CLI and an MCP server that give AI coding agents browser control through structured accessibility snapshots. It is open source under the Apache License 2.0, developed by Microsoft and actively maintained on GitHub.
