Testcontainers

Throwaway Docker containers for tests with real dependencies

Tool overview

Testcontainers is an open source library that provides throwaway, lightweight instances of databases, message brokers, web browsers or anything else that can run in a Docker container, so tests can use real dependencies instead of mocks.

Test dependencies are defined as code: containers are created when the tests run and deleted afterwards, with only Docker required. Implementations exist for Java, Go, .NET, Node.js, Python, Rust, Haskell, Ruby, Clojure, Elixir and PHP, and modules provide ready-made containers for common services.

Testcontainers for Java is distributed under the MIT licence and actively developed on GitHub; version 2.0.5 was released in April 2026.
