Tracetest

Trace-based testing with OpenTelemetry

Tool overview

Tracetest builds integration and end-to-end tests using OpenTelemetry distributed traces. A test triggers the system, then asserts not only on the response but also on the trace data produced by every service involved.

Tests can be triggered by HTTP or gRPC requests, trace IDs and other triggers, and can check parts of a distributed system that are otherwise hard to observe, such as message queues, asynchronous API calls and external APIs. Tests are built visually in the web interface or written in YAML, and run manually or in CI. Tracetest integrates with existing tracing solutions and with tests written for Cypress, Playwright, k6, Postman or Artillery, and can also be used for synthetic monitoring and to check the quality of OpenTelemetry instrumentation.

Tracetest is developed by Kubeshop. The open source edition on GitHub has not changed since June 2025; the commercial Tracetest service is active.
