iperf3

Network bandwidth measurement and load tool

Tool overview

iperf3 performs active measurements of the maximum achievable bandwidth on IP networks. A client sends traffic to an iperf3 server, and for each test the tool reports the measured throughput, packet loss and other parameters.

Timing, protocols (TCP, UDP and SCTP) and buffers can be tuned, and several parallel streams can be used to saturate a link. This makes iperf3 useful to stress network links and equipment, check the network capacity of a test environment, or detect bottlenecks before running load tests. A library version allows its functionality to be used in other programs.

iperf3 is a redesign, from scratch, of the original iperf developed at NLANR/DAST. It is developed by ESnet and is free and open source under a BSD licence.
