Static analysis for bugs in Java code, successor of FindBugs
SpotBugs is a program that uses static analysis to look for bugs in Java code. It is a fork of FindBugs, now an abandoned project, and continues its development with the support of its community.
SpotBugs checks for more than 400 bug patterns. It requires a JRE or JDK 11 or later to run but can analyse programs compiled for any version of Java. It can be used standalone or through integrations with Ant, Maven, Gradle and Eclipse.
SpotBugs is free software distributed under the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL-2.1) and actively developed on GitHub; version 4.10.5 was released in October 2026.
