Wraith

Responsive screenshot comparison tool

Tool overview

Wraith is a responsive screenshot comparison tool created by the BBC News team. It takes screenshots of web pages at several screen widths, in two environments or at two points in time, and compares them to highlight visual differences.

Pages can be listed in a configuration file or discovered with a spider, and before_capture hooks prepare the page before the screenshot. Results are presented in a gallery showing each page with its differences. Wraith is installed as a Ruby gem and relies on external programs for browsing and image comparison.

Wraith is open source under the Apache 2.0 licence. The BBC archived the GitHub repository in January 2026; the tool is no longer maintained.
